How to Prepare for AMC 10: Strategy & Study Plan
A comprehensive guide to AMC 10 preparation, including topic breakdown, time management, and AIME qualification tips.
What is the AMC 10?
The AMC 10 is a 25-question, 75-minute exam for students in grade 10 and below. It covers algebra, geometry, counting, probability, and number theory β but excludes trigonometry, advanced algebra, and complex numbers.
Top scorers qualify for the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination), the next step toward the USA Math Olympiad.
Understanding the Scoring
Since 2022, scoring is simple: 1 point per correct answer, 0 for wrong or blank. Max score: 25. Before 2022, the classic system awarded 6 points correct, 1.5 blank, 0 wrong (max 150).
AIME qualification typically requires around 18/25 (new) or 120/150 (classic). These cutoffs vary yearly.

Topic Breakdown & Priority
Algebra (30-35%): Linear equations, quadratics, sequences, functions, inequalities. This is the highest-yield topic β master it first.
Geometry (25-30%): Triangles, circles, coordinate geometry, area/perimeter, similar figures. Many students find geometry the hardest β practice visualization.
Counting & Probability (20-25%): Combinations, permutations, casework, complementary counting, expected value.
Number Theory (15-20%): Divisibility, primes, modular arithmetic, Euler totient, digit problems.
30-Day Study Plan
Week 1: Take a diagnostic test. Review algebra fundamentals. Do 10 problems/day from past AMC 10 exams (problems 1-15).
Week 2: Focus on geometry. Practice coordinate geometry and circle problems. Increase to problems 10-20.
Week 3: Counting, probability, and number theory. Start tackling problems 15-25. Time yourself.
Week 4: Full practice tests under timed conditions. Review all wrong answers. Focus on your weakest 2-3 topics.
